- Margaret Neale, Five Steps to Better Negotiating: Winning can mean more than dollar signs. The modern framework for negotiation is broken. Most of the prevailing theories see negotiations as battles in which the players act rationally in their own best interests. If you are lucky, this is a battle you might win. But what if you reframed the whole idea, to think of a negotiation not as a fight but as a problem-solving exercise? And one in which emotions can play a systematic and powerful role? Come to this event and you will hear Margaret Neale, The Adams Distinguished Professor of Management and the Robert and Marilyn Jaedicke Faculty Fellow for 2018-2019 at Stanford GSB, challenge longstanding conventional wisdom on negotiating. They say that when people cease to see negotiation as a fight, they open themselves up to more creative solutions and are more able see more situations as opportunities to negotiate.
- David Demarest, Reputation Management: The Leader’s Role in the Midst of Change
As Stanford’s (almost retired) senior public affairs official, David Demarest reports to the President of the university and oversees Stanford’s government relations – federal, state, and local, as well as community relations. For many years he also oversaw the university’s communications and special events organizations. Demarest served four years as an assistant to President George H. W. Bush and member of the White House senior staff. As White House communications director, he worked directly with the president, the White House chief of staff and the Cabinet, and in that capacity managed a broad range of White House communications activities. In these roles, he knows firsthand how to manage your company’s reputation when going through an organizational change. NAPEO will also honor Dave as he takes his next step professionally. He will be stepping down as the head of public affairs at Stanford, but will still be teaching and using his free time to finish his book about this time with George H.W. Bush.
- Jeffrey Pfeffer, The Thomas D. Dee II Professor of Organizational Behavior at Stanford GSB will speak to the group on the topic of his new book, “Dying for a Paycheck,” based on groundbreaking new research. In his timely, provocative book, Jeffrey Pfeffer contends that many modern management practices hurt employee engagement, increase turnover, and adversely impact employees’ physical and emotional health and company performance. He offers ways to build human sustainability at work. This timely topic will delve into what you, as employment professionals, can do to help the current workforce and help you and your client’s management team run their organizations.
